Tarumitra,
meaning "Friends
of Trees" in Hindi and Sanskrit, is a student
movement to protect and promote a healthy environment on Earth. Started
by students in Patna, India in 1988, the movement has spread into
hundreds of high schools and colleges all over India. It has over
2,00,000 members in over 600 high schools and colleges. Tarumitra
has also had several full time volunteers from abroad.

equip its members with skills in handling local environmental
problems

organise campaigns for the preservation of bio-diversity

promote a spirituality and a world view that is earth friendly

Activities
:
a. Through
its environmental wing Taru Mitra, VJC conducted campaigns against
cutting of trees before Holi and use of crackers before Diwali.
b. Rallies were organized on the occasions of World Health Day, Earth
Day, Environmental Day, Ozone Day, Water day etc.
c. Students of 10 schools in Varanasi are members of the Taru Mitra
eco clubs, which have regular meetings.
d. VJC also organized painting, poetry and essay competitions on environmental
issues in various schools.
e. On the eve of Raksha Bandhan, the feast of Rakhi, tying of the
love cord between sisters and brothers, the students of various schools
tied beautiful large size Rakhis to trees and plants and took resolution
to protect trees as their own brothers and sisters. The event was
covered by various T.V. Channels. |
